Scope and Content: Material in this file includes correspondence with HM Prison services, the Northern Ireland Secretary of State Roy Mason, the Northern Ireland Office, Stormont Castle, the Home Secretary ,Whitehall London, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and with the Scottish Home and Health Department. Material relates to human rights of both political prisoners and those arrested under emergency legislation, to the non-acceptance of Irish names at UK ports, or when stopped by RUC, to the supply of Irish language books to prisons, the arrest of Fr Pól Mac Seáin, and the case of Seán Ó Canáin who was charged for not having tax on his car (the car was off-road, he turned up for court, wanted to be heard in Irish, was refused, and was then fined "in his absence").
